Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 Tire Review
Winter Tire
By Tabitha

The Hakkapeliitta 7 is a studded tire designed for extreme winter conditions, combining unparalleled new technology and excellent comfort in mind. This tire is made in a way that allows it to mold to the roads ever changing conditions in a flexible way despite severly low temperatures that normally make tires stiff.

Air Claw Technology
The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 was also designed to give a comfortable and smooth driving experience traditionally not found in studded winter tires such as this. Air shock absorbers beneath the studs help cushion the impact of harder surfaces, while a malleable tread compound adapts to changing terrain. This reduces wear and tear on the road, increases the life of the tire, and reduces noise.

Unique Tread Compound
Nokian put together natural rubber, and canola oil which provide traction for super low temperatures, and prevent ice from tearing the tires. Silica provides traction in wet and slushy conditions, while improving rolling resistance and fuel consumption.

Aggressive Tread Pattern
The symmetrical tread pattern has a fixed rolling direction and you can rotate all four tires interchangeably. The center of the tread does not contain any siping and improves traction on asphalt. If you click on the image of the Hakkapeliitta, a bigger version of the tire will pop up in which you can see the studs and sipes in greater detail. It is specially designed to prevent snow from clogging up the sipes and grooves, and to essentially clean itself.

Tire Test Results
When taken for a test ride in some harsh winter conditions here is what we found out. We did not drive in dry or wet road conditions, only on snow and ice, which is what these tires are designed for.

Pros:
  • Provides excellent ice traction when maneuvering, cornering, and braking. The studs really grip well whether on thick ice around town or slick black ice on the freeway at high speeds.
  • We drove in light snow conditions as well as fairly deep snow (about 1 foot deep) and the tires provided very good grip in both. I didn't feel like the grooves were getting clogged up with packed snow which can happen with some tires.
  • Steering and handling was crisp and very precise, which is rare in extreme winter conditions like this, no matter what type of tires you are driving on.

Cons:
  • These tires are not for driving on dry road conditions - you need to swap them out if there is no longer any snow or ice on the road.

Conclusion:

If you are looking for a studded tire with some of the best winter traction around, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 is an excellent choice. Whether you encounter ice or deep snow, this tires provides grip like no other. Always keep in mind your local laws and regulations, as some areas do not allow studded winter tires. Also keep in mind that these need to be installed in sets of 4.
