GT Radial Champiro SX2 Tire Review
Max Performance Summer Tire

UTQG Ratings     Treadwear 200    Traction A    Temperature A

Fits rim sizes 15 to 18.     Aspect Ratio 35 to 50.     Section Width 195 to 265mm.
The Champiro SX 2 is a summer tire designed for maximum traction in dry and wet conditions, and not meant to be driven on snow / ice. As you can see from the image to the left, there are no small winter sipes / slits to provide winter traction in such conditions. Circumferential and lateral grooves channel water out when driving through wet conditions and prevent hydroplaning.

As you can see, this tire maximizes the amount of rubber to road contact you can get. The GT Radial Champiro SX2 comes in V and W rated versions, so it is good for up to 149 and 168 mph respectively. This is definitely a tire for those that like to put the pedal to the metal. The asymmetrical design these need to be rotated from front to back and not side to side.

Tire Details and Info:

Dual Block Design - this tire has extra wide shoulder block which give you extra stability when cornering.
Enhaced Silica Tread Compound - Although generally used to improve wet grip, this specially formulated silica from GT Radial improves not only wet traction but dry traction as well.
Extra Wide Circumferential Grooves - prevent hydroplaning and increase wet traction
Gradient Step Up Design - New design that stops the tires from heating up too much

Tested:

So how do the Champiro SX 2's perform? We took them out for a test in both dry and wet conditions to see what these tires were made of. First we drove in dry conditions through everyday traffic and the tires provided a nice and comfortable ride with average road noise. Next on the highway the tires performed well at high speeds, lane changing, cornering, etc. (yes we did break the speed limit :). On some back roads we took the tires out for the real testing and pushed them to the limit. Steering response was nice and tight; the tires responded crisply and immediately to driver input. Cornering and handling were stable, even when driven hard.

Next we took the tires out for a test run in the rain. They performed almost as well in wet conditions as during the dry traction test- traction, steering response, and handling were all superb. The tires did not hydroplane when encountering puddles and provided a very confident ride overall. The tires did not slip and we were definitely impressed by the performance and wet traction.

Pros:
  • Fantastic dry traction and handling
  • Crisp and tight steering response in both dry and wet road conditions
  • Comfortable ride for a low profile / high performance tire
  • Warranty (5 year limited warranty which is longer than most for high performance tire)

Cons:
  • Treadlife (this is part of the deal with high performance tires because of soft tread)

Conclusion:
If you are looking to replace your current tires with a set that will provide you with some fun summer driving, look no further. The GT Radial Champiro SX 2's come in at bargain pricing for this category and hold up with the best when it comes to handling, cornering, and overall traction. As with all summer tires - rotate frequently!
