Michelin Pilot Super Sport Tire Review
Max Performance Summer Tire UTQG Ratings Treadwear 300 Traction AA Temperature A The Pilot Super Sport is a beast of a tire, developed by Michelin for top performance vehicles such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porche, Mercedes, BMW, and more. It incorporates many of Michelin's top new technologies including Variable Contact Patch 2.0, Ceinture Twaron, and Bi-Compound Tread. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport is Y rated, which means it is good up for speeds up to 186 miles per hour. If you click on the image of the tire you can see a little bit better detail. This is one very wide tire, which gives it great traction, steering response, and cornering.
The circumferential grooves (that circle the tire) help displace water to provide better wet traction and prevent hydroplaning. The lateral grooves channel that water to the outside of the tire. The Variable Contact Patch 2.0 technology makes the tire grip more firmly when cornering by keeping all of the contact patch on road. The tire is broken up into two parts, with the inner 4/5th's of the tire containing wet tread compound and the outter 1/5th containing dry tread compound. The Bi-Compound portion of the tire helps with cornering as well- the outer part of the tire is reinforced with a carbon elastomer. The Bi-compound also helps the tire mold and grip to even the smallest imperfections in the road. Last but not least, the Ceinture Twaron is a high density fiber that helps the tire keep shape at high speeds by distributing pressure evenly when centrifugal forces pull the tire outward. Tested: The Pilot Super Sport replaces the Pilot Sport 2 in the Michelin lineup and you can really feel the time and effort that Michelin put into developing this tire. It handles like a track tire built for racing but still gives the driver wet traction for everyday commuting. When driven aggressively and at high speeds the PSS grips the road like glue, whether you are accelerating, cornering, or braking. When maneuvering back and forth between cones on the track, the tires provide crisp steering response. In wet road conditions the tires gripped the road superbly as well. Acceleration, cornering, and braking, all inspired confidence even when driving very aggressively.
Conclusion:
If you are looking for a high performance tire and don't mind spending a few extra bucks, the Michelin Pilot Super Sport is about as good as it gets. It is amazing how well this tire grips the road in both dry and wet road conditions. Price ranges from about $150 to $500 per tire depending on size, which is a great value for this tire.
