The Potenza RE92A is a high performance all season tire designed for use in dry, wet, and light snow conditions.
This tire comes as original equipment on many sedans and has become quite the popular choice because of the versatility it provides. The RE92A is supposed to be quite the jack of all trades, and we set out to see if this was really the case.
Tested: Unfortunately this tire is not all it is hyped up to be. When taken for a spin this tire provides great dry traction and good steering response. But once taken into wet conditions it really loses its traction and grip on the road. A hydroplaning test in which the car is taken at intervals of increasingly higher speeds over a very large but shallow pool, showed it was not able to properly disperse the water. When tested to see how comfortable of a ride the tire provides, it was pretty good but not excellent. We took it over bumps, potholes, and various road conditions to see how much cushion it provided. With tires that are supposed to provide better performance, you get a more low profile tire that do not provide as comfortable a ride. On the highway the Bridgestone Potenza RE92A made an average amount of noise when compared with similar all season tires. The small sipes (grooves for winter traction) generally tend to make more noise on the highway than summer tires.
Conclusion:
The Bridgestone Potenza RE92A is a middle of the road tire that performs well is dry conditions but struggles once driven in the rain, snow, or ice. This tire ranges from about $200 to $320 depending on size and vendor which is more expensive than you should be paying for a tire of this performance. I would recommend the Bridgestone Potenza G 019 Grid as an alternative high performance all season tire for a good bargain or the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S if you want the best. |
