Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT Review
Ultra High Performance Summer Tire
UTQG Ratings     Treadwear: 240     Traction: AA    Temperature: A

This tire is designed for dry and wet road conditions, and not meant to be driven in snow or on ice.
Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT

If you take a look at the SP sport Maxx GT image to the left you can see the asymmetrical tread pattern designed by Dunlop which contains some special high performance technologies to give you increased traction and performance. This tire contains more circumferential and lateral grooves than we are used to seeing in summer tires, which should give this tire better wet traction and improve hydroplaning resistance.

The tread also contains carbon black compound which is designed to mold the tire to the road's surface to increase traction. Dunlop incorporates its Hybrid Jointless Band technology which helps the tire stay on the wheel when maneuvering through turns at high speeds.

The majority of sizes for the SP Sport Maxx GT are Y rated for speeds of 186 mph +. This tire does not come with a treadlife warranty, but does come with a 1 year uniformity warranty. Worksmanship and Materials are warrantied for 6 years.

Tested:
So the biggest question is- how do these Dunlop tires handle?! First we took these for a spin on the track in dry conditions to see how well they performed. Steering response was crisp and consistent, and while cornering the tires provided excellent traction. We drive pretty aggressively to test the tires at the limit of their capabilities.

High performance summer tires like this are the most fun to test because they give the most traction and grip out of the different tires that we test. All season tires have more sipes for snow and ice traction which hinders dry and wet performance. These SP Sport Maxx GT's were really a pleasure to drive and provided great traction with everything we threw at them in dry conditions.

After sprinkling the track with water to simulate rainy conditions we took the tires for another ride to see how well they performed. The grooves that are splattered throughout this tire do a great job of evacuating water once the footprint hits water and then pavement. Traction, cornering, and steering response were all very good in wet conditions as well. We were unable to test for hydroplaning resistance this time around, but based upon how well the tires did in wet conditions overall, I would not be too worried about it.

Pros:
-  Fantastic dry traction and grip
-  Excellent all around wet traction
-  Crisp and precise steering response
-  Very good overall handling and cornering

-  Pretty comfortable ride for this type of tire

Cons:
-  Tread wears quickly (to be expected for a high performance tire)
-  No snow or ice traction (this is a summer tire)

Conclusion:
The Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT is right up there with the best in the high performance summer category. These are tires for those who want ultimate traction in both wet and dry conditions (and are willing to pay for it!) Price ranges from about $250 to $750 depending on size.
