Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 Tire Review
Winter Tire

Dubbed as a premium winter performance model, the Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 is a tire that provides great handling and traction despite changes in driving conditions. Featuring a silica-based compound and directional tread pattern, the tire enhances handling and provides great traction on wet and slushy roads. The high-density, lateral zigzag sipes and independent shoulder blocks also help strengthen the tire’s grip on snow and ice.

The tire boasts of a rim flange shield—a rubber casing that hugs the wheel flange and acts as a buffer, preventing it from possible curb damage. As a part of Dunlop’s most prized range, this tire also comes in a run flat version that utilizes the brand’s trademark self-supporting technology. This feature allows the tire to run flat up to 50 miles (80km) after it’s punctured or blown out. Take, note, however that this is only possible if your car’s wheels are designed for run-flat tires.

Unfortunately the Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 comes in a limited number of sizes. Available tire width ranges from 215-275mm while rim diameter ranges from 16”-19”. This makes the tire most suitable for more compact cars such as sports cars and coupe.

Being able to perform in severe snow conditions, this snow radial is branded with the mountain/snowflake symbol. Its MSRP starts at $144 and varies depending on your chosen specification and vendor.

This tire fits these cars and I'm sure a couple others:
  • Audi RS-6, S4
  • Cadillac CTS
  • BMW 750i, M5, 550i, M3, 325is
  • Ford Fusion, Mustang GT
  • Chevrolet Corvette, Impala
  • Hyundai Accent
  • Honda Civic, Accord
  • Lexus LS430, LS460
  • Infiniti G35x, FX35
  • Mercedes Benz SL500, 500E, C240
  • Mazda RX-8, 6, Miata
  • Nissan Maxima
  • Subaru Forester, Impreza WRX, Legacy
  • Saab 9-5, 9-3
  • Toyota Corolla
  • Volkswagen Passat, Jetta

Tire Test Results

Being labeled a “premium model” by its manufacturer, consumers expect not only high-quality materials from Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 but also outstanding performance in various winter weathers. Through our personal test, we try to discover whether it’s worthy of its label or not. Here’s what we found out:

Pros
  • The tire performs well regardless of the road condition it faces, be it dry, wet, slushy, or icy.
  • It offers great handling, cornering, and braking, inspiring confidence
  • It provides a nice comfortable ride in almost all conditions.
  • The tire offers a good sense of stability, and accelerating is relatively easy.
  • The wear rate is above average; the tread is most likely to wear only after a few seasons, depending on how frequently it’s used and the aggressiveness of the driver.

Cons
  • As the snow deepens, the tire’s grip decreases just slightly.
  • The tire isn't as quiet as some other models, although the noise is still tolerable and diminishes based on the surface.

Conclusion
On the whole, the Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 is a tire that offers excellent handling and comfort in most winter weathers. You can tell that it is a tire designed for snow and icy conditions on the highway for faster driving cars. It is not designed for trucks going through deep snow and off roading. For the price, I would say this is a good value tire and recommended, especially if you are looking to swap it out for summer tires when the season changes.
