The Altimax HP is listed as an all season tire but I would not list it as so. Traction and handling in ice and snow is mediocre at best. That said, if you are driving in dry and rainy conditions this tire gets the job done for a fairly good price. If you click on the tire's image to the left you can see in detail the water channeling grooves that prevent hydroplaning as well as sipes (the small slits for winter traction). The Altimax HP is pretty responsive when accelerating, braking, and turning, but is definitely not a performance tire. The road noise and tread pattern are slightly louder than similar tires in this class. On the more technical side, the Altimax HP tire is constructed with a high-density silica compound atop a low-density foundation which is supposed to provide long treadlife. Smart technology is also built into the tread, so a simple visual check can alert you if your vehicle is out of alignment or if you need new tires. General Altimax HP tires range from $62 - $133 per tire depending on size.
The Bottom Line:
If you are looking for a reasonably priced tire (and not driving in the snow frequently) the General Altimax HP is a good all around tire. It provides a nice smooth and comfortable ride while still giving good traction for braking and cornering. It comes with a 40K or 55K mile warranty depending on whether you purchase the V rated or H rated which is a middle of the road warranty (pun intended). Similar Tires: 1. Michelin Defender 2.
