The Continental ExtremeContact DW is a very high performance summer tire not to be driven on snow or ice but like all performance summer tires gives you great dry and wet traction. (The DW stands for Dry and Wet).
When tested on the track the ExtremeContact DW's provided great cornering stability and steering response when driven hard. They provided almost the same traction in the wet as they did in dry conditions. Hydroplaning resistance was good at low speeds and still inspired confidence even at high speeds (yes we did have a little bit of fun with this creating some waves!). |
Part of the reason this tire performs so well is due to the massive circumferential sipes that go around the tire (take a look at the image to see what I'm talking about here). Those large gaps around the tire channel out the water as your tires hit the road to prevent your from hydroplaning - which can be one of the scariest things in the world. Those that have experienced it before know it will make your heart stop as you completely lose control of your vehicle.
The Continental ExtremeContact DW is a fairly low profile tire but it still provides a nice and comfortable feel when driving. We took it over a few speed bumps and potholes and it felt almost like a touring tire. In terms of noise, the tread was not loud nor was it really quiet - it is very rare to find a quiet high performance tire as they are generally very soft and stick to the road.
A little bit about the make up of the tire: as many of you may know, many tires such as this have chamfered tread blocks to help improve cornering for those fast turns, keeping your car steady. You can also see from the picture above that this is an asymmetrical design which means that when the tires are rotated you can only go back to front and not side to side.
Another cool thing about this tire is that it has indicators on it (which is now becoming much more common on many tire brands), that let you know how fast the tire is wearing. As the tire treads starts to wear away, the "W" in the tire will fade away as well, and will eventually turn into a "D" which will inform you that it's time to replace those tires! (Unless you want to keep them for a fun dry day out on the track :).

The Good:
- Steering and handling is very good - Great wet and dry traction - Smooth ride for a low profile tire |
The Bad:
- No traction for ice / snow (this is a performance summer tire) |
Conclusion:
The Continental ExtremeContact DW is a good all around high performance summer tire. When toggling back and forth on the track it did take the tires a moment to catch up, but they did not slip. Traction was good in all conditions we tested. If you are looking for a fun tire to drive and don't need winter traction the ExtremeContact DW's are a great choice. Prices start at $95 per tire depending on size, which is a great value for a maximum performance tire.
