Toyo Proxes R1R Tire Review
Ultra High Performance Summer Tire
This tire is designed for dry and wet traction, and not meant to be driven in snow / ice road conditions. These need to be driven and stored in temperatures above 15 degrees F because of the way the tread compound is designed.
![]() This tire comes in both V and W speed rated versions which means it is good up to 168 mph (V) and 186 (W), depending on how fast you like to go! This is a beast of a tire. If you click on the image of the Proxes R1R you can see it in greater detail. There is a lot of rubber to road contact with these, and they are super wide which gives you even more traction. The Proxes R1R comes in a semi directional design that looks like Wolverine took took some stabs at it. As you probably know zig zagging grooves are necessary to channel water to the outside of the tire to prevent hydroplaning and improve wet traction. Like many similar racing inspired tires, these contain high tensile steel belts to keep the tires structure intact at high speeds. Jointless beads improve the way the tire connects to the wheel to make sure these stay put when driven at the limit. They also have an enhanced sidewall that is slightly angled to improve handling and steering response. Tested:
So how do these actually perform when taken for a ride? These tires are a lot of fun to drive. We took them for a spin in our Subaru WRX sti and pushed them to the limit. Back road driving through the foothills provided some nice curved roads as well as the occasional straightaways. The R1R's provided great handling, traction, and steering response. We pushed them pretty hard and they did not slip at all. We drove them only in dry conditions, so I can't say how well they handle once it starts raining.
Conclusion:
These are a great low budget option in the ultra high performance category. They don't perform as well as a couple of other high performance summer tires, but these other options run 2 to 3 times the price as the Toyo Proxes R1R's. The R1R's handle great and are a lot of fun to drive. They provide great all around traction and the steering response is nice and crisp. |
