If you do not encounter snow and ice during the winter, go with a summer tire instead of this one. Summer tires give you better traction in both dry and wet conditions than an all season tire does. You can read reviews for summer tires here- Summer Tire Reviews. Firestone designed the Precision Sport with an optimized tread pattern for improved handling in all types of weather conditions. If you click on the tire image to the left you can see the tread blocks, grooves for channeling water, and zig zag sipes for winter traction. There are some nifty new features built into this tire that are supposed to increase performance in a few different ways. The tread slot and siping distribution is designed to give drivers even wear while adding traction. 3D block edge shapes improve cornering and steering response by increasing the tire's stiffness. And the circumferential grooves (the channels that go all the way around the tire) help prevent hydroplaning when encountering wet weather conditions. Tested:
When taken for a spin how do the Firestone Precision Sport's feel? On dry terrain the tires perform and handle well, even when pushed pretty hard. These are mid tier high performance all season tires and they perform as such. They are not quite as crisp and precise as some other models out there like the Michelin Pilot Sport or Kumho Ecsta PA31 that we just tested, but they do perform well in most situations. On wet terrain the tires grip the road pretty well but do struggle a bit when maneuvering or cornering hard (like you would in a situation to swerve out of the way of something in the road). In both wet and dry conditions the tires provide a comfortable and fairly smooth ride. The tread pattern does have quite a few grooves and sipes, which can be a little bit noisy at times, especially with the windows down.
Conclusion:
Overall the Firestone Precision Sport is a good all around high performance tire, but just not up there with the best in its class. The tires perform well, especially if you don't push them too hard. We did not test in snow or icy conditions, so cannot judge the tire's traction there, but by looking at the tread pattern it would appear to be a decent winter tire. If you drive frequently in the snow go with a dedicated winter tire which you can find here. The Firestone Precision Sport ranges from about $65 to $125 depending on size, which is a pretty good value for this tire.
